Man Utd Could Target Another Portuguese Teenager After Losing Out To Chelsea For Quenda

Braga winger Roger Fernandes is on the list of alternatives after Manchester United missed out on Geovany Quenda, according to reports.

Chelsea confirmed last week that they will sign Quenda at the end of next season. That came as a blow for the Red Devils who were hoping to reunite the teenager with his former coach Ruben Amorim this summer.

Quenda’s decision means the club have been forced to look at other options and GiveMeSport claim that Roger’s name has been mentioned.

Like Quenda, he is very inexperienced. He is just 19 and has made only 80 first-team appearances.

Why are Man Utd interested in Roger Fernandes?

The Portuguese youngster can play in multiple different positions, having being utilised as a right winger, left winger, at right wingback, left wingback, right-back and left-back in his career at both youth and senior level.

This season, Roger has mostly been deployed on the right wing, cutting in onto his stronger left-foot. In many ways, he has a very similar profile to Quenda, although he may have a lower ceiling in terms of his potential.

Are other alternatives to Quenda being explored?

Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong has been linked with a switch to Old Trafford on and off over the past couple of years and the Dutchman is believed to have a €40m (£33m) release clause in his contract.

The fact that the 24-year-old is used as a wingback at club level means he would be a great fit for Amorim’s system.

As Frimpong is available for a relatively small price, it would also make him an attractive target for the Red Devils, who will not have a sizeable budget when the transfer window reopens at the end of the season.
