Player Background:

Josh Conerly Jr was one of the best offensive tackle recruits in recent memory. The former five-star recruit played high school football for Rainier Beach High School in Seattle, Washington. Not only was he the top offensive tackle recruit in the country, but he spent time on the basketball court too. He was a consensus top-10 recruit and was awarded the Anthony Muñoz Award, given to the best high school lineman in the nation. Conerly Jr was heavily recruited by the powerhouse programs like Alabama, Texas, and Michigan but he ultimately enrolled with the University of Oregon during the 2022 recruiting cycle.

As a freshman, he was mainly used as an extra lineman in jumbo packages but Conerly Jr caught a touchdown pass against the Colorado Buffaloes in the tenth game of his college career. From his sophomore season on, he started at left tackle in every game for the Ducks. He surrendered just two sacks on a total of 1,592 blocking snaps according to Pro Football Focus. Time after time, he anchored an offensive line that was recognized as a finalist for the Joe Moore Award, the most sought-after award for any offensive line in college football.

Without the help of Conerly Jr, the Oregon offense may have never hit its stride this past season both on the ground and through the air. He stepped up in big games and shut down some elite pass-rushing talent throughout the College Football Playoff last season. Although his team fell short of the national championship, many Ducks fans will be following Conerly Jr as he chases a starting job at the next level.

Accolades:

Third-team All-American (2024)

First-team All-Big Ten (2024)

Honorable Mention All-Pac-12 (2023)

Best Tools/Pros:

Josh Conerly Jr has some of the best movement skills among all the offensive tackles in the 2025 NFL Draft. He is the definition of a fluid and quick mover at his position. This helps him work in space, serve as the lead blocker and get to the second level effectively. His ability to explode off the line of scrimmage and execute pull blocks will allow him to move along different offensive line spots if required. This same explosiveness is evident in his initial hand punch where he pairs a good pop to knock the rusher back with solid hand placement to keep them from getting into his chest.

The progress and growth Conerly Jr showed this past season is the reason why he is such a high-rising prospect. When comparing his first 2024 game tape to his last, it is easy to see the strides he has made and the confidence he has gained. He shut down Abdul Carter, the top edge prospect, in the conference championship game and didn’t have many performances that would raise concern about him moving forward. The confidence Conerly Jr now plays with helps him to stay in every play knowing he can trust his athletic ability to recover in certain situations.

Tools to Improve/Cons:

The technical aspects of playing offensive tackle aren’t refined yet for Conerly Jr. He can get overaggressive and find himself oversetting on some pass reps. There are too many examples on tape of him bending at the waist and he doesn’t do a good job of sinking his hips. This leads to a lack of balance and power on back-to-back plays and pass rushers will just overpower him and get him off balance. When he gets caught off balance, he tends to start lunging and will dip his head when trying to reset himself.

Play strength is another area of the game where Conerly Jr will need to improve. As mentioned before, he is overpowered too many times on film and can be easy to knock down. He struggles to sustain his blocks and to take defenders out of the play. Instead of reaching out, it would be nice to see him try to get in front of his assignments. When he does sustain his blocks, he doesn’t do a great job of finishing his blocks and can be too quick to try and recognize his next assignment.

Potential Team Fits:

NFL Projection:

Josh Conerly Jr is one of the rare high-floor, high-ceiling players and showcases the ability to hold his own against elite pass rushers. He is arguably the most athletic offensive tackle in this draft class and should he add more strength, he’ll become a key part of an NFL offensive line. Given his experience in a multiple-run scheme, Conerly Jr will fit in with any offensive approach at the next level.

After lighting up the combine, it is hard to see him sliding outside of the first 32 selections. Any team at the backend of the first round should run to the podium if he is available. Should Conerly Jr refine his technique and work on adding more power, he could quickly become the best tackle selection in this draft class.
