‘Means a lot to me…’ Man Utd ace welcomes approach from European club amid talks of exit

Manchester United might be about to enter their most important part of the season after the international break but the murmurs of the window have already begun.

It will be the most important transfer window at Manchester United since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, as stable ownership has been joined at the helm by their own manager.

Add to that a major squad overhaul in the offing, and the possibility for even more players to leave than the ones arriving, and it’s impossible to not have one eye on the summer.

One player from the current Man Utd squad definitely has an eye on the summer window as he has welcomed approach from a European club amid talks over his future.

Victor Lindelof welcomes transfer approach

Of all the players who face an uncertain future at Old Trafford in the summer window, one player whose future is pretty clear is Victor Lindelof.

Lindelof’s contract expires in the summer and it would be a huge surprise if the club opt to renew it as the Swede has steadily fallen down the pecking order.

Ayden Heaven’s emergence is probably the last nail in the coffin for Lindelof’s United career and the player seems to be well aware of the same if his latest comments are any indication.

In an interview with Portuguese journalist Sebastiao Sousa-Pinto, Lindelof has opened the door to a reunion with Benfica amid talks of his exit from Man Utd.

He said: “Benfica as a club means a lot to me. It’s the club that made me the player I am today. I don’t know what will happen and what my decision will be.

“But it’s a club that means a lot to me and a club that I like. I don’t only have myself to think about. It’s a decision we have to make together as a family.”

“O Benfica como clube significa muito para mim. É o clube que me transformou no jogador que sou hoje. Não sei o que vai acontecer e qual será a minha decisão.

Lindelof to Benfica suits all parties

As Lindelof says, Benfica is the club that gave him the platform to flourish and eventually earn a move to Manchester United, so a reunion is appealing.

The Portuguese league will be more suited to his style of play, especially at this stage of his career, and going back to familiar surroundings will help his family as well.

The Swede has been an unremarkable but reliable servant to Man Utd but is unlikely to have many suitors better placed to offer him top-quality competition than Benfica.

The Portuguese powerhouses are perennial league title contenders and regularly pose a threat in the Champions League as well.

It is a reunion that suits all parties. Benfica is a club for which Lindelof will probably thank United for not renewing his contract!
