Introduction & Specification Details and Close-up
Remote working can be great, but it does come with its limitations, and that usually means desktop real estate. Luckily, monitor technology has gotten to the point where we can have a Full HD resolution at a 60Hz refresh rate in our backpack, and best of all, it can be powered over USB-C.
A quick look at the Duex Float Portable Monitor
The Duex Float aims at being that solution screen real-estate solution for people who feel their laptop just isn't offering enough, but with its intuitive design, the Duex Float offers stackability, meaning it is capable of attaching to the back of a laptop and provides a screen above your laptop screen.
For those people already apprehensive about attaching something to your laptop, the Duex Float magnetically connects, and is by no means permanently attached. If this doesn't rest your concerns, that's fine, the Duex Float can be used as a traditional side-long second display with its in-built stand.
The possibilities don't stop there, as the Duex Float can also be utilized by gamers, particularly mobile gamers who want to play games with others on a bigger screen than their handheld device. All of this connectivity is powered by a single USB-C port, with the Duex Float being completely plug-play, meaning there is no need for additional drivers. Moreover, the portable monitor comes with a touchscreen LCD display, a resolution of 1920 x 1080 (FHD), and a 60Hz refresh rate - the perfect pairing for clear visuals and a smooth experience.

Design
MobilePixels, the maker of the Duex Float, has kept the aesthetics of the device to a minimum, as the portable monitor doesn't feature any flashy LED lights or over-the-top branding. There is the presence of the MobilePixels logo on each of the side panels and on the base panel, "Duex Float by Mobile Pixels". Opening up the Duex Float, you are immediately presented with the 15.6-inch display, which we get more into in the Panel Breakdown section of the review, and four notches in the base panel. Each of these notches can be used to angle the portable monitor at different variations when it's being used alongside a laptop.

There is also the inclusion of a hinge to elevate the screen to the desired height. Moving to the underside of the base panel there are four indents which are for the provided magnets that can be used to attach the Duex Float to a laptop. These are optional and are for those who don't want to use the provided adhesives.
Keeping to the base of the Duex Float on the right-hand side there is a USB-C port and a Mini HDMI port. On the left side of the there is the up, down and select buttons for navigating the On-Screen-Display, along with another USB-C port.

It should be noted the Duex Float isn't compatible with every single laptop when it's in stacked mode, but it will work perfectly fine with any device that is capable of outputting a video signal across USB-C cables or Mini HDMI. If you are wondering how the device will be powered if it's running over HDMI, users will still need to have a USB-C cable plugged into a power supply, such as a phone charger, laptop, etc, to give the display enough power to run.
The Duex Float is really designed to accommodate any working style and orientation, and its setup was extremely easy, thanks to the magnet locations template that was provided in the box. Upon setup, I lined up the template with my 15-inch MacBook Pro, placed the magnets on the designated holes, and then easily attached the Duex Float. After plugging in my USB-C cable, the setup was complete. It's the same process for the provided adhesive strips if your laptop screen shell isn't magnetic.

Overall, the design of the Duex Float is intuitive, clean, minimalistic and very well thought out. The Duex Float accommodates all portable working orientations in one simple device.
Panel Breakdown
MobilePixels has equipped the Duex Float with a 15.6-inch display that features slim bezels. The display has an anti-glare coating that is designed to reduce reflections, which only adds to the versatility of the Duex Float, as it can be used in a range of lighting conditions. I tested the Duex Float in direct sunlight, and it performed adequately. However, I would still recommend using the display under some shade. In any reasonable amount of shade that one would decide is a comfortable spot to work, the screen on the Duex Float will work perfectly fine.
The Duex Float comes with 10-point touchscreen capabilities that can be used in both Windows and Mac operating systems. While I didn't often use the touch capabilities due to my workflow not calling for them, they performed as advertised. I can imagine the touchscreen being used for brief on-the-go presentations, say if you were meeting with a client at a coffee shop and were going over performance for the quarter, and you just needed to showcase metrics over a few slides. Moreover, the touchscreen worked greatly for browsing webpages and dancing between tabs.
The 1920 x 1080p (FHD) resolution display across a 15.6 inch screen means buyers will get 141 pixels per inch (PPI), which means text, images, and video and other media look crisp. Notably, the best viewing experience for a monitor is between 92 and 110ppi, with a higher number typically being better in most cases as it translates to more clarity.
MobilePixels has equipped the Duex Float with a good selection of On-Screen Display (OSD) options that can be customized for a tailored viewing experience. The Duex Float has the following options: Backlight, Contrast, Saturation, Temperature, Input selection, EyeCareMode, G-Sensor, Touch, SleepSensor, and Reset.

Users are able to increase the Backlight or Brightness setting to 80 before the Duex Float requires an additional power source to reach the maximum level. Out of the box, the temperature setting was set to 7500 Cool, with additional options of 9300 Cool+, 6500 Warm, 5800 Warm+, and sRGB. The input selector option does what it says on the top of the tin - users can select which input signal they want to display (HDMI, USB Type-C 1, or USB Type-C 2).
EyeCareMode is designed to reduce eyestrain over long periods of working, and is predominately useful during nighttime use. The Touch setting enables/disables the touchscreen capabilities, G-Sensor detects when the Duex Float has been orientated 180-degrees, or in portrait mode, and the SleepSensor detects when the laptop or PC has gone to sleep.
Performance
The Duex Float is truly a versatile portable monitor, and throughout my time testing the display, I put it through various scenarios. Firstly, I used the Duex Float in its stackable orientation and took it to a café where I worked for a few hours. The monitor performed as advertised and enabled more screen real estate without having to take up too much desk space. However, I did notice a few looks from customers within the café that were probably wondering what I was doing with this odd-looking attachment.

These looks by other people certainly didn't affect performance, and didn't bother me personally, but I thought it would be worth mentioning for those that would find this a problem. Next I took the Duex Float and worked for a few hours with it alongside my laptop. This orientation is where I most enjoyed the display as I was able to take it out onto my back porch, enjoy the Sun, and not feel hindered by the limited screen space of my laptop.
In both of the aforementioned orientations, I really came to appreciate the lack of cables needed to power the Duex Float. A short USB-C cable is all one needs to power this display as it only requires 7W. Next, I plugged in my Nintendo Switch and played a few rounds of Super Smash Bros Ultimate. This worked extremely well, and I can imagine the Duex Float being used as a multi-functional travel device by someone who is on the road quite a bit and travels with a Switch and a laptop. When work is required with the laptop, the user would plug in the Duex Float for that extra screen in real estate, and once work is complete, the Nintendo Switch is hooked up for some gaming leisure time.
Overall, the Duex Float performed extremely well, and is something I definitely won't travel without, especially when I head overseas for events such as Computex and the Consumer Electronics Show where extra screen real-estate is now a necessity.
Final Thoughts
So, should you buy a Duex Float? That, of course, depends on your situation. The Duex Float is aimed at someone that travels for work regularly and feels they are in need of another screen. With that being said, I'd still recommend it to someone that works from home but is sick of being stuck and inside, wants to get out of the house, but doesn't want to slow their workflow down.

The 15.6-inch display with a 60Hz refresh rate is all that is needed for a second on-the-go display, and the Duex Float makes power that very easy with a single USB-C cable. It's honestly quite hard to fault this device, but perhaps my one criticism would be the weight. At 4lbs (1.81kg), some users may find this too heavy to place in their backpack, and for travelers that are already on a strict weight budget, it could be a deal-breaker. With that being said, the weight translates to the durability of the device, which comes with a very premium and sturdy feel. I can't imagine the Duex Float breaking any time soon, even in a crammed backpack.
MobilePixels has created a one-size-fits all portable monitor, and for a price of $229.49, currently discounted from $399.99, users on the go will feel a total upgrade to their setup and workflow if they decided to pick one up. Congratulations MobilePixels, this device has earned my biggest recommendation stamp possible, and a permanent place in my personal travel tech items.
