Two New England Patriots cuts claimed on waivers, one immediately

Curtis Jacobs didn’t last long on the waiver wire.

Cut by the Patriots along with three others on Friday afternoon, the linebacker was claimed by the Tennessee Titans, who were the first team up in the NFL’s wire order. Jacobs couldn’t have been scooped up any quicker.

The 23-year-old undrafted free agent out of Penn State appeared in nine games in New England as a rookie. Primarily a core special teamer, Jacobs also made two starts on defense, but played just 23 defensive snaps. He landed on injured reserve in November after suffering a scary head injury against the Rams.

Mike Vrabel has been rebuilding New England’s off-ball linebacker room this offseason, signing Robert Spillane and Jack Gibbens, and Jacobs wound up as one of the odd men out.

He wasn’t the only Patriots player to find a new home on Monday, as Lecitus Smith was claimed by the Pittsburgh Steelers. The veteran interior offensive lineman was active for eight games in 2024, but only played five offensive snaps and 28 on special teams.

A pair of Friday’s cuts — tackle Caleb Jones and linebacker Andrew Parker Jr. — went unclaimed, so both of those players are now free agents.
