Ukraine Fighter Jets ‘Completely’ Destroys Russian Base-Kyiv

Ukrainian fighter jets "completely destroyed" a Russian base in the Kursk region, located near to the Ukrainian border, Kyiv's military said on Tuesday.

Newsweek has contacted the Russian Foreign Ministry by email for comment.

Why It Matters

Ukraine has said that Moscow's military bases are legitimate targets and its forces regularly target them. Attacks on Russian soil are typically claimed by the Security Service of Ukraine and Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate.

What To Know

The hit was announced by the General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces, which said Tuesday that up to 30 Russian troops were killed when the country's Air Force struck the base in Kursk.

"As a result of the strike, the facility was completely destroyed," the General Staff said.

Newsweek could not independently verify the military's claims. Russia has not commented on the incident.

The reported attack came after Kyiv launched a shock new incursion in Kursk in January-on territory which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and prominent government officials have previously insinuated could be part of possible peace talks.

Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said during a national TV broadcast in August 2024 that Ukraine hoped a summer Kursk incursion would boost Kyiv's position in potential future negotiations with Russia.

On March 20, Reuters reported, citing three U.S. and European officials with knowledge of the matter, that claims by President Donald Trump that Ukrainian troops were encircled in Kursk were incorrect.

What People Are Saying

Ukraine's General Staff said on Facebook: "The destruction of this element of the enemy's military infrastructure reduces its ability to conduct combat operations against units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine in the Sumy and Kursk regions.

"Pilots of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as other components of the defense forces, will continue to strike at the enemy in order to weaken its military potential. What follows is...Glory to Ukraine! Successful hit!"

What Happens Next

Fighting is ongoing in the region, with North Korean troops bolstering Russian forces to push back Ukrainian soldiers.

Ukraine's commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrsky has said Kyiv aims to divert "significant" Russian manpower from front-line areas in Ukraine, including the eastern Donetsk city of Pokrovsk, which is a key logistical hub for Ukrainian forces in the area, with its Kursk operation.

This is likely to remain a key goal for the Ukrainian Armed Forces as Russia seeks to take control of Ukraine's Donbas region, which comprises the entirety of occupied Luhansk and Donetsk.
