Djed Spence has been a revelation for Tottenham this season
Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence had a horrid start at the club after arriving from Nottingham Forest in 2022. The Englishman earned his move to Spurs after helping Nottingham Forest get promoted and stay up in the Premier League. Spence was one of the key players during his time at the City Ground and was also a fan favourite because of the impact he had made.
But after earning a move to Spurs, things went south pretty quickly under then manager Antonio Conte. The Italian manager just did not give Spence a fair chance to impress and was sent out on loans in the first 2 years of his Tottenham career. As per BBC, Antonio Conte described the Spence signing as,
“Spence is an investment of the club. The club wanted to do it. I said OK, this player is young but he showed he can become a good, important player for us. The club decided to buy him.”
Djed Spence had a horrid start to his Tottenham career under Conte
But the 24-year-old seems to turned things around this season under Ange Postecoglou. Spence has become one of the first names on the team sheet and has been consistently performing every week. He has also replaced Spain international Pedro Porro and made the right-back spot his own.
Djed Spence reveals James Maddison has helped a lot
Djed Spence has not a particularly easy career at Tottenham ever since arriving in 2022. The Englishman was an outcast under then manager Antonio Conte and was also not considered by Ange Postecoglou in the Australian’s first season in charge of the club. But since December, Spence has been performing consistently and has been one of the few positives for Ange’s side.
Speaking on who has helped him the most, Spence said on Rio Ferdinand Podcast,
“I would say Madders. He’s there for me, makes sure I’m ready before games, even after games, and he’ll text me if he’s not in the squad because of injury, and be like, Djed, you know what to do today, or I want to see this from you. Madders supports me a lot to be fair.”
James Maddison has helped Djed Spence get through a rough patch at Tottenham
James Maddison has been a key player under Ange Postecoglou for the Lilywhites. The England international is also the vice-captain and is one of the leaders in the dressing room. Spence suggests that Maddison has always been there for him during a tough phase and helped him before and after games to get in the right frame of mind.
How good has Spence been for Tottenham?
Djed Spence has been a revelation for Spurs this season under Ange Postecoglou. The 24-year-old is finally starting every week for the Lilywhites, and it is fair to say that an England call-up is looking likely for the ex-Forest star.
As per Sofascore, Spence has played 24 games this season, scoring two goals and providing two assists in that time. The Spurs No.24 has also been involved in the build-up play effectively and has a passing accuracy of 86.8%. He has replaced Pedro Porro in the starting 11 and it looks like he will be there to stay for a long time.
