Fast Facts: Alexander Mattison

The Dolphins signed running back Alexander Mattison in the free agency window. A star at Boise State, Mattison was drafted in the third round by the Minnesota Vikings, spending five years there before a stint with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2024. He's rushed for 2,790 yards in his career with 22 total touchdowns.

A bell cow in college, Mattison played in an outside zone scheme in Minnesota under Head Coach Kevin O'Connell, which makes the fit for him in Miami obvious. A 5-11 runner with a stocky 220-pound build, Mattison's experience stretching runs to the perimeter pairs with his ability to push the pile, rounding out Miami's diverse running back room.

The Vikings implemented their offensive system in 2022 when O'Connell was hired. Mattison was the No. 2 back behind Dalvin Cook that first season but took over the top spot on the depth chart in 2023. He posted a career-best 700 rushing yards and added 32 receptions.

"It's [been really good](https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/kevin-oconnell-been-really-good-to-see-alexander-mattison-take-on-three-down-role) to see Alex Mattison take a few more reps and really show that all three-down kind of ownership that he's been capable of for a long time," O'Connell said.

The traits that earned Mattison the starting role in 2023 were the traits the Dolphins value in a running back – the ability to do everything and keep the entire menu of play calls open regardless of the back in the huddle.

Mattison can contribute as an early down runner and in the passing game, especially in pass protection. He's been called upon for 226 pass-blocking reps in his career (Pro Football Focus) and been charged with just seven pressures allowed. He's had three seasons with more than 30 receptions, adding a 33-yard receiving touchdown last season.
