Leeds United could see their transfer window shut before next season begins should they earn promotion to the Premier League.
The proposals are said to have been tabled during a meeting between top flight sporting directors last month. A date of August 14 has apparently been suggested, which is two days before the 2025/26 Premier League season begins.
The mooted reintroduction of an early deadline supposedly came from club chiefs who felt it best that managers have their squad structure in place before the season begins. They also suggested it better underpins the integrity of the competition.
However, the Telegraph says there is scepticism over whether the motion will gain enough support, with 14 clubs needing to vote in favour in order to pass it through. Discussions are set to take place in a meeting on Thursday, where the idea could be scrapped before it gets voted on if it is clear the proposal will be turned down.
The Premier League previously shut its window early in 2018 and 2019 but this was shelved following the Covid pandemic after clubs found themselves on the back foot, with other major European markets staying open for another few weeks. It seems unlikely they would follow the Premier League in adopting an early deadline this time either.
And there is also the threat of the Saudi Pro League, which has disrupted the European market by extracting some of its talent. Critics worry that closing the Premier League window early may leave clubs powerless to replace players who move to the cash-rich Pro League.
Given they are not currently a member of the Premier League, Leeds - like any promoted club - could be subjected to an earlier deadline next season without having a say in the vote, should it be held before the summer.
