Anthony Gordon is carrying an injury but was already ineligible to feature in Newcastle United’s next game.

Newcastle United are hopeful that Anthony Gordon won’t require any extra time on the sidelines after he picked up an injury whilst in action for England.

The 24-year-old was shown a straight red card in the FA Cup fifth round defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday March 2, resulting in a three-match suspension. He still has one game left to miss having already sat out of the Premier League win away to West Ham United and the Carabao Cup final victory over Liverpool.

The Magpies host Brentford next Wednesday before Gordon is eligible to return for the trip to relegation threatened Leicester City on Monday, April 7. However, United were left fearing they’d be without him for longer after sustaining a hip issue when representing his country.

Gordon’s ban does not carry over to international level, allowing him to feature in the Three Lions’ 2-0 win against Albania on Friday. After coming on as a 74th minute substitute, it wasn’t long before the winger sustained a nasty blow to his hip. He received on-field treatment after the final whistle had blown.

When will Anthony Gordon return?

A couple of days later, it was confirmed Gordon had withdrawn from the squad - forcing him to miss the 3-0 win versus Latvia on Monday evening. But the positive news is his injury doesn’t appear to be as bad as first feared.

“It’s just a matter of pain, there’s a big bruise around the hip region and he’s unable to walk properly,” England boss Thomas Tuchel said on Sunday.

“He left camp. He has a huge bruise around the hip region and was it so painful he couldn't even walk properly. He needs some time to heal and to get better. That's why he left camp. It’s a shame because he had a good chance to start, and I'm sad that he is now out.

“He was so happy to play and get some minutes for us. He had a red card, then he got sick - he came a bit late into camp - and gets his minutes and gets straightaway injured. I’m sad for him but we cannot change it, and I think he still needs a couple of days rest, so he's with his family now to get the rest and we find other solutions.”

With 16 days to recover, Gordon should - as originally planned - be in contention for Newcastle’s trip to the King Power Stadium.
