Report: Everton could now lose 'special' player because of Newcastle United's Dan Burn

One day Dan Burn will wake up from his Newcastle United and England dream.

The 32-year-old has just enjoyed the best few days of his professional career, helping Newcastle United win the Carabao Cup final and end their trophy drought.

Dan Burn scored in the final, giving the Magpies the lead with a thunderous header at Wembley.

The giant defender was soon back at Wembley, with Burn making his England debut in the 2-0 win over Albania. He played well, and almost marked his debut with a goal. Unfortunately, Burn was denied by the woodwork.

But Burn certainly took the opportunity that Thomas Tuchel handed him, and it is an opportunity that has another defender debating their future.

Jarrad Branthwaite considering Everton future

That is according to the Telegraph, who report that Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite may now consider a move away from Goodison Park after missing out on the most recent England squad.

While Branthwaite was ignored, Burn got the call. That chain of events could trigger a move away from Merseyside for one of David Moyes’ best players.

That is not necessarily a reflection of Burn and his ability, but it is understandable why someone like Branthwaite would question where his international career is going ahead of the 2026 World Cup after falling behind an uncapped 32-year-old in the pecking order.

Interestingly, Branthwaite was linked with Newcastle last summer, while the Magpies are in the market to sign a centre-back in 2025. However, there is nothing to suggest that the player who Jamie Carragher called ‘special’ on Sky Sports in 2024 is on Eddie Howe’s radar ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window.

Burn set to return to Newcastle for cup celebration

While Branthwaite is seemingly pondering a move away from Everton, Burn is preparing to party when he returns to Tyneside.

His England duties are over, which means Burn can turn his attention back to his domestic commitments.

Newcastle United’s next game is on April 2nd, as they face Brentford at St James’ Park.

Before that, Newcastle will celebrate winning the Carabao Cup on March 29th. There will be a parade through the city centre for Burn and his Toon teammates, before the celebration culminates on the Town Moor.
