With the NFL Draft less than a month away, the Patriots will have a massive decision to make with the No. 4 overall pick.
New England is starved for top-end wide receivers and still have a glaring vacancy at left tackle. Depending on how the board falls, Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter or Colorado cornerback/wideout Travis Hunter could be the most talented players available. Much will depend on how many quarterbacks are taken in the top three.
So who would Drake Maye like to see the Patriots draft with the fourth pick?
“Take the best player,” Maye said on the “Up & Adams Show” in Mexico on Tuesday morning. “I think that early, take the best player available. Any one of those guys.”
Fortunately for Maye, that’s how Eliot Wolf and company plan to attack things. At a season ticket holder draft party over the weekend, Wolf said the Patriots don’t feel compelled to reach for need in this year’s draft.
“No, we don’t. The best player available is going to be the way it is,” Wolf said. “Maybe we went for need a little bit too much last year. Obviously that culminated in us drafting Drake Maye so it wasn’t all bad. But, just moving forward, it’s taking the best player, and understanding that we’ve filled a lot of needs already in free agency.”
The Patriots added a pair of high profile defensive free agents in Milton Williams and Carlton Davis, both of whom signed deals for more than $50 million, as well as depth signings on both sides of the ball.
“We feel really excited about the some of the names that we’ve added. We still know there’s a lot of work to be done,” Wolf said. “(We’ve had) a lot of defensive adds, a few offensive adds, we’re always looking. We’re still looking. The (Stefon) Diggs visit is part of that. We’re just really excited to be able to go into the draft not forced to pick something.”
