After the Patriots prioritized defense in free agency, many believe New England should add support for Drake Maye with its first pick next month.
But how does the Pro Bowl quarterback himself feel about the Patriots’ draft strategy?
Appearing on the latest episode of “Up & Adams,” Maye was asked what he’d like to see New England do with the fourth overall pick. The sophomore signal-caller acknowledged he didn’t want to put his foot in his mouth, but he [did provide an answer,](https://youtu.be/ioPFH92ABJ4?si=y3I88aNx5LEIlxHz) albeit diplomatic.
“You take the best player,” Maye told host Kay Adams. “I think that early, you take the best player available. Any one of those guys.”
It’s unclear if Maye actually feels that way or if he simply was echoing Eliot Wolf. At multiple points this offseason, the Patriots’ executive vice president of player personnel claimed New England would employ more of [a “best player available” approach](https://nesn.com/2025/03/eliot-wolf-offers-insight-into-patriots-draft-strategy-or-did-he/) to this year’s draft after picking more for need last year.

Time will tell how the Patriots utilize the fourth overall selection. But even if New England takes an offensive player, there still will be more work for Wolf and company to do as they try to create a favorable situation for Maye in 2025.
