Ruben Amorim could be set for awkward talks with his former club if reports about Manchester United's summer transfer targets are to be believed.

The Portuguese coach has endured a challenging start to life at Old Trafford following his move from Sporting CP in November last year. United sit 13th in the Premier League standings and face a difficult test in the Europa League quarter-finals against Lyon next month.

Attention is already shifting to the summer transfer window and what Amorim must do to improve the squad at his disposal. After a quiet January transfer window, this will be the manager's first real opportunity to put his stamp on the team.

Interestingly, that includes links to players at his former club, most notably the sought-after striker Viktor Gyokeres. The in-demand Sweden international joined Sporting in 2023 and penned a five-year deal with the club upon his arrival.

However, it has been claimed by Sky in Germany that Gyokeres could be available in the summer for significantly less than the £85m release clause reported in recent months. The outlet has suggested that the player has a verbal agreement with Sporting that will allow him to leave for a fee in the region of £60m.

All of United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester City have been linked with the 26-year-old in recent times, but a move to Old Trafford would see him reunite with his former manager. United officials will hope that the presence of Amorim in the dugout will persuade Gyokeres to complete a move if a deal is pursued.

The striker isn't the only Sporting star being targeted, however. Winger Francisco Trincao has been linked in recent times amid uncertainty over Marcus Rashford's future at the club.

Portuguese outlet A Bola have reported that Premier League clubs are eyeing a move for the 25-year-old ahead of the summer window. It has been suggested that Amorim is determined to strengthen in wide areas in the coming months with Trincao at the top of the list of targets.

However, like with Gyokeres, United won't be the only club battling for his signature. Premier League rivals Arsenal, along with the player's former club Barcelona, are also interested in adding the Portuguese international to their ranks this summer.
