Liverpool are eyeing a move for Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni, with the 25-year-old now considered one of their top defensive targets for the summer transfer window.
According to Football Insider, the Italian centre-back has been identified as a player who could immediately strengthen the Reds’ backline while also serving as a long-term successor to Virgil van Dijk.
However, any deal would come at a hefty cost, with Inter reportedly demanding at least £60 million for their prized defender.
Liverpool’s defensive overhaul taking shape
With uncertainty surrounding Van Dijk’s contract situation – his deal expires in June 2025 – Liverpool are planning to reinforce their defence regardless of whether their captain stays or leaves.
Sources suggest Bastoni is high on their shortlist, alongside Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi and Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen.
Bastoni’s pedigree is undeniable. A crucial figure in Inter Milan’s Serie A title charge, the Italian international has racked up 41 appearances this season, further solidifying his reputation as one of Europe’s elite defenders.
His composure on the ball, tactical intelligence, and ability to play out from the back make him an ideal fit for Arne Slot’s system.
Inter Milan’s reluctance to sell
Despite Liverpool’s interest, prying Bastoni away from the San Siro will be no easy task.
The 25-year-old’s contract runs until 2028, putting Inter in a strong negotiating position. The club views him as central to Simone Inzaghi’s long-term plans and is not expected to entertain offers unless an exceptional bid is made.
Additionally, Tottenham Hotspur remain long-term admirers of the Italian defender and have closely monitored his progress, meaning Liverpool could face competition if they choose to pursue a deal.
With the summer transfer window fast approaching, Liverpool’s recruitment team, led by Richard Hughes, will need to decide how aggressively they pursue Bastoni.
His technical ability and defensive leadership align perfectly with Liverpool’s ambitions, but Inter’s reluctance to sell could make negotiations difficult.
