Dashcam shows sinkhole swallowing motorcyclist

Dashcam footage has captured the frightening moment a sinkhole swallowed a motorcyclist on a busy South Korean road.

The bitumen road collapsed in the capital Seoul, creating a massive 20-metre-wide by 20-metre-deep cavern.

A male motorcyclist disappeared into the deep hole, and a woman whose van was passing over the site was injured.

The motorcycle driver was later found dead underground after about 17 hours, officials said.

The sinkhole appeared suddenly at an intersection in the Myeongil-dong neighbourhood in eastern Seoul on Monday afternoon (local time).

Dashcam vision filmed from the car travelling behind the vanished motorcycle has gone viral on South Korean social media.

It shows the sinkhole appearing within seconds underneath a passing white van.

What appears to be the back end of the van dips into the hole before the vehicle miraculously bounces out.

At the same moment, a motorcycle on the van’s tail drops into the earth.

The motorcyclist, who was in his 30s, was found before noon on Tuesday, emergency officer Kim Chang-sup told a televised briefing.

Kim said the man was found wearing a helmet and motorcycle boots. Rescue workers found his Japanese-made motorcycle and mobile phone before reaching his body.

Rescuers used excavators, shovels and other equipment to find him, he said.

The injured woman did not fall into the sinkhole and she sustained minor injuries.

The cause of the sinkhole was under investigation.

Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon visited the site on Monday night and asked authorities to find why the sinkhole happened and prevent recurrences of similar incidents.
