High-ranking member of Sacramento Kings’ front office expected to land job as college GM

A top-ranking member of the Kings’ front office could be leaving Sacramento to take a college job in the Big 12 Conference.

Sources told ESPN the University of Utah is targeting Wes Wilcox, a long-time NBA front office executive, to take over as general manager of the school’s men’s basketball program. A deal is reportedly expected to come together in the near future.

Wilcox is the assistant general manager in Sacramento. He has helped general manager Monte McNair transform the roster with mixed results over the past five years.

The Kings won 48 games to secure the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference in 2022-23. They ended the longest playoff drought in NBA history after 16 consecutive losing seasons. The Kings came up short last season, losing in the final round of the NBA play-in tournament.

Wilcox has worked in the NBA for more than 20 years. He started as a scouting and video intern with the Miami Heat in 2001-02.

Wilcox worked as a video coordinator with the New Orleans Pelicans in 2002-03 before going to the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he spent seven seasons as an advance scout, college scout, pro personnel scout, assistant coach and director of player personnel.

Wilcox later worked for the Atlanta Hawks, where he served as assistant general manager from 2012-15, general manager from 2015-17 and special adviser from 2017-20 before coming to Sacramento.

Wilcox also worked as general manager of the G League Canton Charge. He hired current Utah coach Alex Jensen as head coach in Canton.
