Wilcox was one of the finalists for Monte McNair’s job during the team’s 2020 search for a new general manager. Wilcox was added to the Kings front office by McNair in October 2020. In January 2023, the Kings extended both Wilcox and McNair.

There has been much speculation about the extent to which Wilcox made decisions in the front office. When it was originally announced he was joining McNair’s staff, a press release stated that he would be involved “in all facets of front office operations including roster construction, strategy and player evaluation.” If that was still the case, then it means he was heavily involved in the major franchise-changing decisions that occurred this season in firing Mike Brown, trading De’Aaron Fox and signing Zach LaVine.

With the Kings in a bit of a spiral on the floor and a confusing future at the moment, this news is interesting. It could be the start of cleaning of the house or a small blip, but it is an indication that things are continuing to change for a franchise yet again in flux.
