Man Utd on alert as Mason Greenwood faces major ultimatum at Marseille, early exit could boost Ineos

Mason Greenwood switched Manchester United for Marseille last summer after Ineos decided to part ways with the forward.

There was a time when it looked like Mason Greenwood had a bright future ahead of him at Manchester United, but everything changed following his arrest in 2022.

Greenwood was consequently suspended by the club following accusations of domestic violence before moving to Getafe on loan for the 2023/24 campaign.

The 23-year-old’s form in La Liga led to interest from several European clubs, but Marseille won the race after completing a £26.6 million deal.

The former United academy graduate has delivered in terms of goal contributions after managing 16 goals and three assists across 28 appearances across all competitions.

Still, Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi is demanding more from his young forward.

Roberto De Zerbi’s frustrations grow towards Mason Greenwood

After losing his place in the Marseille team for the last two matches, Greenwood faces uncertainty over his future at the Ligue 1 club.

Reports in France suggest Greenwood is in a race against time to convince De Zerbi that he has a future in his team.

According to La Provence, Greenwood has until the end of the season to win back the trust of De Zerbi or he will be sold.

Marseille’s top scorer this season has come under criticism from his head coach for showing a lack of effort in recent weeks.

“I expect more from him [Greenwood],” De Zerbi said at the beginning of March, as quoted by Goal.

“He has to do more, because what he is currently showing is not enough.”

This was a clear warning from De Zerbi and the latest reports suggest no progress has been made on his relationship with Greenwood since the above comments were made.

Manchester United can benefit from Greenwood transfer

Ineos wanted to get as much as possible out of the deal that saw Greenwood join Marseille.

That’s why United included a 50% sell-on clause in Greenwood’s move to Marseille. It gives the club a chance to earn even more on a deal that took place last summer.

United will want to maximise any profits and a transfer for Greenwood would help us achieve that. It could make a difference in helping United complete more signings before the 2025/26 campaign kicks-off.

Ineos chiefs will be keeping a close eye on Marseille and Greenwood for the remainder of the season.

Greenwood’s stock could continue to rise if he gets back to scoring goals for Marseille.
