Free agent quarterback Russell Wilson is leaving the Pittsburgh Steelers and heading to the New York Giants, according to Adam Schefter. That eliminates the Giants from the Aaron Rodgers conversation and leaves the Steelers as the only team truly remaining. Rodgers could also decide to retire.
Wilson’s deal will have $10.5 million guaranteed and could be worth up to $21 million. He will certainly start for the Giants ahead of Jameis Winston, who they signed last week.
Wilson and the Steelers relationship was reportedly fractured, according to Bob Labriola of Steelers.com.
“The fact that hasn’t happened leads me to believe there is a fracture somewhere in the relationship between the Steelers and Russell Wilson too deep to overcome,” Labriola wrote.
Wilson’s play tailed off sharply toward the end of the season. On top of that, a report dropped in January that offensive coordinator Arthur Smith took away Wilson’s ability to work at he line of scrimmage. That could have irked people in the organization.
ources told PennLive at the NFL Combine that Wilson’s end of the season struggles paired with a report that offensive coordinator Arthur Smith took away his freedom at the line of scrimmage ruffled feathers in the building.
It would have taken a mending of relationships for Wilson to return to the Steelers. Even if Rodgers chooses to go elsewhere, Pittsburgh seems somewhat content with what they have at the position.
But now it is official the team will not have any of their three quarterbacks on the team for the second straight season.
