Two of the Trump administration’s top intelligence officials threw the new defense secretary under the bus at a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on Tuesday. That’s when outraged Democrats used a fortuitously timed hearing on global threats to demand answers to how and why they had included Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, in their discussion of classified plans for a U.S. attack on Yemen—on Signal, no less, a supposedly encrypted commercial messaging app that the Pentagon had warned employees in 2023 was not suitable for discussing classified information. Not only that, a few days after the Yemen discussion—but before Goldberg disclosed it—the Pentagonwarned employees in an agency-wide bulletin that Signal users were being targeted by Russian hackers.
