Alex Toohey's NBA dream is on the cusp of becoming reality after the Sydney Kings young gun announced he would declare for the draft this year.

The 20-year-old became the first member of this year's NBL Next Star class to formally announce he would throw his hat in the ring when he took to social media on Tuesday.

The skilful forward has had a productive two years at the Kings, with his growth proving a bright spot for the team in a mostly disappointing 2024/25 season.

Toohey averaged 10.6 points and 1.4 steals a game as the Kings bowed out in the play-in tournament with a loss to Adelaide.

The Canberra product started 25 of 29 games this season, playing mostly as a small forward, and is projected to be taken with a second-round pick.

Rocco Zikarsky, Malique Lewis and Izan Alamansa are fellow Next Stars considered a chance to declare for the draft, which will take place from June 25 to June 26.

Australian college prospect Tyrese Proctor, currently playing for famous basketball school Duke, has also factored into draft projections for 2025.

Josh Giddey, Ousmane Dieng and LaMelo Ball are among the players to have been taken as first-round NBA draft picks after going through the Next Stars program.
