Jayson Tatum doubtful for Suns-Celtics with ankle sprain

Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum is doubtful for Wednesday’s game against the Phoenix Suns with a left ankle sprain, the team announced Tuesday.

The small forward was injured in the Celtics’ 113-95 win over the Sacramento Kings on Monday night.

With 3:35 remaining in the third quarter, Tatum’s left ankle landed on Kings center Domantas Sabonis’ foot following a made 3-pointer that put Boston up 10.

Sabonis was issued a flagrant 1 foul for being in the shooter’s landing zone. Despite going down immediately following the injury, Tatum made one of two free throws before exiting.

Even with the early departure, Tatum still led all scorers with 25 points on 8-of-15 shooting and 5 of 9 from long range. He added seven rebounds and eight assists.

Jayson Tatum’s injury could impact Suns’ play-in positioning

If he does miss Wednesday’s game, it would be a huge loss for Boston and a dodged bullet for a Phoenix team in the thick of a play-in race.

Phoenix (35-37) finds itself back in the play-in picture as the 10th seed in the Western Conference thanks in large part to a four-game win streak. Kevin Durant has been especially impressive during this recent stretch, taking home Western Conference Player of the Week on Monday.

Its positioning could change, however, with Sacramento (35-36) only 0.5 games ahead of Phoenix but sputtering behind a three-game losing streak. Their next opponent? The Western Conference-leading Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday night.

The Dallas Mavericks (35-37), who are just outside the play-in by 0.5 games, are also still in the picture even with the disastrous Luka Doncic trade.

Getting Anthony Davis back on the court this week certainly helps.

Phoenix is back in action Wednesday night against Boston. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. and can be heard on the Arizona Sports app, 98.7 and ArizonaSports.com.
