Mohamed Salah celebrates his goal against Southampton
Mohamed Salah is driving Liverpool to the Premier League title
Bill Shankly has a statue at Anfield, as does Bob Paisley, while Kenny Dalglish has a stand named after him. Mohamed Salah has a strong case to be honoured in some way by Liverpool for what he is doing this season.
No-one, not even the most rabid Red, expected Liverpool to win the Premier League this season and the fact they are on course to do so is down to Salah. Salah is the Premier League’s top scorer with 27 goals and he has 17 assists.
That is 44 goal involvements in 29 Premier League games and the Egyptian star is the driving force behind what will be Liverpool’s record-equalling 20th title.
He has only failed to score or provide an assist in four of Liverpool’s Premier League games. That is some level of consistency and even when he is quiet, he will pop up with a goal contribution, like he did in Liverpool’s last Premier League match against Southampton when he bagged two penalties.

They took his career total for Liverpool to 243 goals and he stands third in their all-time scoring list behind Ian Rush and Roger Hunt. Salah has nine games left and he will have more than one eye on Erling Haaland’s Premier League record of 36 goals in Manchester City’s Treble-winning season in 2022-23.
Salah’s best haul for the Reds came in his first season in 2017-18 when he bagged 32 as part of his haul of 44 goals. He looks certain to beat that and only Haaland, Andy Cole and Alan Shearer have netted more times than him in a Premier League season.
In all competitions, he has 32 goals and 22 assists, and that return is off the scale. His form is all the more incredible because he is 33 in June and he is the perfect professional athlete in how he looks after his body.
His phenomenal statistics back up fans’ calls for owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) to give him what he wants to stay when his current deal expires this summer. The supporters say it would cost over £100million in today’s transfer market to buy a striker, who could deliver the kind of numbers he has.
Those contract talks continue and Salah wants longer terms and better money than FSG are prepared to offer. That game of brinkmanship will continue and neither side is willing to blink first as the clock ticks down on his contract.
But if Salah does go, what a leaving present he will gift Liverpool fans. The 2020 success was not a huge surprise because Jurgen Klopp led the Reds to an incredible 97 points - a record for the runners-up - in 2019.
This title triumph is arguably Liverpool’s best since Shankly first lifted the old First Division championship in 1964 and it is largely down to Salah.
