Manchester City, Liverpool and the remainder of the Premier League are watching with intrigue as they await the former's sentence. In February 2023, the Premier League lodged 115 charges against the club relating to the payment of managers and players between the 2009/10 and 2017/18.

City have always denied the allegations and insisted they had 'irrefutable evidence' to clear their name. Nevertheless, these allegations shocked world football and led to plenty of speculation surrounding various punishments.

The Premier League has since come under fire from many for the slow process surrounding the allegations. An independent panel only heard evidence in September 2024 and retired to consider their verdict in December.

Since then, it has been deemed 'only a matter of time' before we hear the verdict but, as of yet, that has not been forthcoming. If City were to be found guilty, the severity of their punishment could be wide-ranging.

Some have suggested they could be immediately expelled while others have suggested points deductions and hefty fines. Another sanction could be that their three Premier League titles won during the time period could be stripped.

Should this happen, like we saw with cyclist Lance Armstrong's Tour de France titles, the team who finished runners-up would be awarded the crown. The ECHO has taken a look at how Liverpool would benefit, or not as the case may be, if this is the route the Premier League takes.

2011/12 - Manchester United

Their first Premier League title was awarded in dramatic fashion as Sergio Aguero scored deep into stoppage time to win the title on goal difference over their city rivals Manchester United. This season was one to forget for Liverpool as they finished eighth, four points below Everton who finished a place above.

2013/14 - Liverpool

Under Brendan Rodgers' management, Liverpool came their closest to winning the Premier League title, to that point, in 2013/14. A heartbreaking slip from Steven Gerrard against Chelsea saw the Reds lose out on the silverware to City.

Luis Suarez was in his pomp that season winning both the Golden Boot and Player of the Season. The top two both scored more than 100 goals in the Premier League that year but City managed to win the title with a two-point advantage over the Reds.

2017/18 - Manchester United

City became centurions in this season as they racked up an impressive 100 points in the Premier League. Second-place United were 19 points behind their rivals at the end of the campaign and yet, Jose Mourinho still looks back on that finish as his greatest accomplishment.

Mourinho has half jokingly insisted that he expects a medal if City are found guilty of their charges. Liverpool finished fourth this season, finishing 25 points behind Pep Guardiola's side.
