Ramping up its pressure, China has launched an online portal to monitor “Taiwan independence” activities, state media reported on Wednesday.
Beijing's move comes as Taiwan has launched a campaign against citizens holding Chinese identity cards, with 14 individuals already notified that their household registration was set to be revoked.
China’s Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council said it added a “reporting section” to its website for the “public to report vile acts by those advocating ‘Taiwan independence’ and their accomplices in persecuting Taiwan compatriots.”
It is “intended to hold key ‘Taiwan independence’ separatists accountable,” said council spokesman Chen Binhua.
Taipei has recently expanded its probe into its citizens, as well as those with Chinese citizenship, citing national security.
It comes as Taiwanese regional leader William Lai Ching-te early this month announced a multi-faceted strategy to counter China’s efforts to "undermine" Taipei's “sovereignty.”
Lai said China had deepened its "influence campaigns and infiltration" against Taiwan, and pledged to take measures to tackle Beijing's efforts to "absorb" the island.
His administration has warned to deport those who have been found involved in such acts.
In one such case, Chinese national Liu Zhenya, who is married to a Taiwanese citizen and is mother of three, left the island on Tuesday, moments before she could be deported by Taiwan.
Meanwhile, Chinese spokesman Chen told reporters at a press conference in Beijing that Lai's strategy aims "to wield political terror and impose dictatorship on the island."
Lai's "17 strategies lay bare his vile character, which is against peace, dialogue, democracy and humanity," Chen said.
His words and actions "are aimed at inciting opposition to and confrontation with the mainland," he added.
Last week, in a rare move, China's Ministry of State Security unveiled the identities of four senior members of the "Information, Communications and Electronic Force Command” of Taiwan, dubbing them as the “main force for the island's ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces to carry out cyber operations against the Chinese mainland.”
