Fewer than 20% of Americans support US President Donald Trump's push to annex Canada and Greenland, according to a new YouGov survey.
The survey, conducted on 1,677 US adults on March 20-24, found that only 19% supported America annexing Greenland when asked if they “favor or oppose America annexing Greenland.”
The number of respondents in favor of “Canada becoming America’s 51st state” is even lower, at only 17%.
Moreover, nearly half of Americans oppose annexing Greenland (49%), and a clear majority are against acquiring Canada (57%). About a third are unsure, with 26% uncertain about Canada and 32% about Greenland.
Americans are split on whether Trump focused on important issues during the first two months of his second term, which began on Jan. 20, with 43% saying he did, and 45% believing he focused on less important matters.
Especially since taking office, Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of acquiring Greenland and Canada, reflecting a broader expansionist rhetoric aimed at asserting US dominance.
Many political analysts say he has neglected “kitchen table” issues that he stressed in his campaign, such as the price of groceries, in favor of fringe ideas he hardly mentioned such as taking the territory of other countries.
Besides Americans, numerous surveys have also found that Canadians and Greenlanders are overwhelmingly opposed to becoming part of the US.
