Chelsea cash injection confirmed as Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital handed£97m incentive

FIFA have confirmed the Club World Cup winner will receive a staggering £96.83million, as Chelsea prepare to compete in the inaugural tournament in the United States.

Enzo Maresca's side, following the completion of the domestic and European 2024/25 season, will travel out to North America to play in the revamped Club World Cup. The Blues qualified for the tournament after winning the Champions League in May 2021.

32 sides from across the globe will compete to become the best team in the world, with Manchester City, Real Madrid, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Benfica, Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid, Red Bull Salzburg, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Porto the European representatives.

The tournament is set to start on Friday, June 13 and run for four weeks, with the final taking place on Sunday, July 13. FIFA have picked 12 venues to host, with matches predominately on the East Coast of the US.

As the football calendar is already jam-packed, there has been widespread criticism hit at FIFA for agreeing a more-expanded Club World Cup in the off-season. However, the financial benefit is HUGE for clubs involved.

In fact, FIFA confirmed on Wednesday that the winner of the competition will bag a tasty £96.83m, giving Chelsea an extra incentive to give it a right good go and try to win the Club World Cup for the second time.

Across the tournament, the total prize pool is £406.58m. UEFA entrants will receive the most, and a variable fee based on ranking and revenue. Chelsea, Manchester City, Real and Bayern to get top end just for competing, with a figure between £9.92m and £29.58m mentioned for each European club.

Chelsea have been drawn in a group with Flamengo, Esperance Sportive de Tunisie and Club Leon for the Club World Cup. They will get their campaign underway on Sunday, June 16 and finish the group stage nine days later, with the knockout phase to follow should the Blues progress that far.

Looking ahead to the tournament, Chelsea's Reece James said on Monday: "Everyone at the club is excited. The best players want to play against the best. It should be an exciting tournament.

"It's great to interact with fans across the US and outside the UK. We do a little bit of it during pre-season, so it's great to be back and competing for an actual competition and trophy.

"It could be difficult because we're used to playing against teams in and around Europe. So, the style is going to be different - how they prepare, how they set up. It will be tough."
