Newcastle United have just made history by lifting their first domestic cup in 70 years. How Leeds United would like to experience something similar in the near future.
Newcastle United and Leeds United could well be a Premier League fixture next season, and a very enticing one at that.
Daniel Farke is doing his utmost to deliver Leeds to the Premier League at a second time of trying and, as ever is the case, Leeds are making hard work of it.
A 2-2 draw at QPR last time out keeps the Whites in 1st place of the Championship table. Though Sheffield United are now joint-top and Burnley in 3rd are only two points behind the Whites.
But promotion would see Leeds go big in the summer transfer window. Last season’s promoted teams have struggled massively in the top flight this year, all currently sitting in the bottom three, which should be enough evidence for Farke and the 49ers to spend big.
One player who the Whites might be able to sign for a it of a bargain fee though is Matt Targett at Newcastle United.

Leeds United target Matt Targett backed to leave Newcastle United
During the January transfer window in which Leeds United failed to sign a single first-team player, Targett was mentioned alongside a possible move to Elland Road. At one point it was even claimed that Leeds United had agreed to sign Targett, who the Magpies signed from Aston Villa in 2022 in a £15million deal.
Since then however, the left-back has played just 46 total games for Newcastle United. This season, Targett has played just once in the Premier League though. Eddie Howe has rarely picked Targett who’s had spells on the sidelines and also spells just simply out of the team, and who also sees his contract expire in 2026.
MORE LEEDS UNITED STORIES
Speaking to Leeds United News, transfer expert Graeme Bailey has confirmed Leeds have an interest in the 29-year-old, also confirming that Howe won’t prevent Targett from leaving St James’ Park this summer.
Bailey says: “Matt Targett remains an interesting option for a number of clubs. He is more than likely to leave Newcastle this summer. Newcastle won’t stand in his way. There options for him in America, but he is someone who Leeds have looked at.”

The latest on Junior Firpo’s Leeds United future
Farke will certainly need at least one other left-back in the summer with Junior Firpo looking more and more likely to leave Elland Road as a free agent in the summer.
Recent reports have confirmed that Firpo looks set to leave Leeds United this summer after the Dominican previously changed his agency, to one that represents a number of Spanish and La Liga players amid previous links to Real Betis.
Targett then, give his Premier League experience, could be a viable replacement for Firpo, though whether he’d provide the same attacking output as Firpo has in recent weeks remains to be seen.
Leeds are back in Championship action on Saturday afternoon with a visit from Swansea City.
