'Look at…' - Rene Meulensteen claims 'everybody is debating and questioning' Man Utd man, he's proving them all wrong

Rene Meulensteen has singled out one thing that Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is “keen on persisting” with during his reign at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim has been forced to weather the storm at Manchester United after he left Sporting CP last November and arrived in the Old Trafford hot seat.

The 40-year-old United manager, who made a name for himself at Sporting CP, was brought into the Red Devils after Erik ten Hag’s departure last October.

Erik ten Hag’s reign as United manager came to an end in 2024 with his sacking after the Premier League club’s difficult start to the 2024-25 campaign.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was United assistant manager under Ten Hag, briefly took charge at Old Trafford on an interim basis after his fellow Dutchman was axed.

Amorim has seen the highs and lows with United in the early part of his Old Trafford reign, with the Red Devils currently 13th in the Premier League table.

United are currently on course for their worst finish in the league table since the Premier League’s formation back in 1992.

However, the Red Devils’ Europa League campaign remains alive and still offers United a chance to lift major silverware and secure a Champions League spot.

Rene Meulensteen raises one major question about Ruben Amorim’s decision at Man Utd

Ruben Amorim wasted no time by imprinting his blueprint on the Manchester United first-team squad after his arrival from Portuguese outfit Sporting CP.

The United head coach has remained firm with his convictions and Amorim has rolled out his tactical system at the Red Devils, which he used at Sporting.

Amorim’s men have been playing with a three-man backline and the formation has yielded mixed results during the early period of his reign at Old Trafford.

Rene Meulensteen, who was Sir Alex Ferguson’s right-hand man, pointed out that there has been debates and questions around Amorim’s tactical system at United.

Speaking on The High Performance Podcast, he said: “There’s changes constantly about playing styles – we’re going in at this moment, we’re very keen on persisting to that 3-4-3 system, where everybody is debating and questioning, is that the right way forward?”

“That constant winning culture that Manchester United had over the years has been diluted, and they look being further away than ever before.

“Look at their position in the Premier League, they’re 13th or 14th, no chance of getting into the top four – very little chance of getting to Europe as well.

“Europa League is a massive competition for them to make sure that they stay in that, and that might be the back door for them to get into the Champions League.”

Ruben Amorim could not be more clear on his tactical system at Man Utd

Speaking at his press conference earlier this month, Amorim once again reiterated that the system that he has implemented is “not the problem” at United.

“I know what to do,” he said, as per the Manchester Evening News.

“But sometimes it is the life of results, and you have to win games. I know the consequences when we don’t win games, but I’m really confident. Since day one, a little bit more frustrated but I am still confident.

“It’s quite simple. We talk about the system, the system is not the problem, is the way of playing. You build up with three, two defenders and one midfielder going down. It is quite simple, I don’t see football like that.

“The problem of our team is not the system. We have a lot of problems, we are trying to work on these problems, of course, every system needs different characteristics. But I was always really clear. I have one idea.

“I am still really confident because I have an idea how to play football. I will not change that, no matter what. And I’m not talking about the system, it’s the way I see football, I will not change that.

“We are going to do it. Or not! We’ll see.”

Nottingham Forest will welcome United to City Ground for their Premier League clash on 1st April, with kick-off scheduled for 8pm UK time.
