Microsoft Speeds Up Big Online Meetings in Teams: Ultra-Low Latency for Town Halls

Microsoft is bringing Ultra-Low latency to Teams' Town Hall meetings, a big improvement that will improve the experience, especially for large-scale virtual events, as first seen by Windows Report.

This update fixes the delay between actions and what viewers see. The delay has gone from 20-30 seconds down to almost real-time. The new "to have" will allow up to 50,000 participants to engage in these events with minimal lag.

Microsoft says that with ultra-low latency, attendees will now be able to view and participate in town hall instances at a much lower latency than before, "ensuring they are in sync with the content being shared by presenters and organizers.

"This update significantly improves the attendee experience compared to the typical 20-30 second delay experienced in the past," the company says. "This feature is available for town hall organizers with a Teams Premium license."

Teams Premium is an upgraded subscription tier with additional options beyond the standard Teams experience. Microsoft says attendees will be in better sync with the presenters and organizers, which could then lead to more effective participation and communication during these large-scale meetings.

The rollout starts later this year in May for desktops and Macs.
