Leeds are unlikely to make any concrete moves until promotion is secured. However, the Whites have already made a few transfer decisions and the profile of players they are considering signing.
Junior Firpo is expected to move on from Leeds despite suggestions that he could still be offered a new contract. Leeds are looking at left-back options, and the Whites are considering Premier League experience as a key factor.
Leeds United have their eyes on a 29-year-old left-back
Targett has been a bit part player at Newcastle this season and is not a big part of Eddie Howe’s plans at the club moving forward.
He has a year left on his contract and is almost certain to look for a new club when the summer transfer window rolls out in the coming months.
According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Leeds have their eyes on the player as they push to secure an experienced left-back in the next transfer window.
He insisted that Targett has offers to move to the United States and several other clubs are interested in getting their hands on him in the coming months.
Bailey stressed that Newcastle are also more than happy to let him leave the club in the next window.
“Matt Targett remains an interesting option for a number of clubs. He is more than likely to leave Newcastle this summer”, Bailey told LeedsUnited.News.
“Newcastle won’t stand in his way. There are options for him in America, but he is someone who Leeds have looked at.”
He would be a good and experienced option
The uncertainty around Firpo’s situation has forced Leeds to look at left-back options ahead of the summer window, but a lot will still depend on promotion.
Wolves’ Hugo Bueno is a major target for Leeds, but he is still unproven in the Premier League, and it is no surprise that Leeds are considering Targett.
Can you name the season these 10 Leeds United shirts are from?
The 29-year-old has 163 Premier League appearances under his belt and would add top-flight nous to the Leeds squad if he joins in the summer.
With only a year left on his contract, Newcastle are expected to sell him for a small fee in the next window, given his lack of game time this season.
Targett would not be a glamour signing, but if Leeds are in the Premier League, he would be a solid addition to the squad.
