The Cleveland Browns have only made one move this offseason regarding the quarterback position, which was trading for former Steelers and Eagles QB Kenny Pickett on March 12th.
It’s seeming more evident that the team has always been planning to select a quarterback early in the 2025 NFL Draft, but most of the Cleveland faithful thought they’d make a bigger splash in the free-agent market as well.
Russell Wilson, one of the last “big” free-agent quarterbacks left on the open market, signed with the New York Giants on Tuesday. It was plausible that he was a decent fit for the team based on their current situation of wanting to win in 2025 while letting a rookie QB sit for a season.
Though Kirk Cousins is technically still an option via trade, there are a few quarterbacks left in NFL free agency that the team might be interested in for various roles:
Carson Wentz
Out of all the quarterbacks still available, Wentz might be the only one who could effectively handle a starting role to open the 2025 season.
He’s gotten a bad rap over the past few years, but the last time he was a full-time starter, he was pretty dang good. If he plays anywhere close to how he did in 2021 then he could end up being Cleveland’s top option to start the year, regardless of who else is on the roster at quarterback.
Tyler Huntley
Huntley would not only bring some experience to a young quarterback room, but he’d already be somewhat used to Stefanski’s offense. He’d most likely be the team’s QB3 in 2025 but also a welcomed addition by the offensive staff.
Drew Lock
Lock is simply one of the best available, physically gifted players left in the quarterback pool. His size and arm strength could make him an intriguing QB2 or QB3 option alongside Tyler Huntley.
He also had a fairly good run to end the 2024 season in New York.
Trey Lance
Everyone knows Andrew Berry loves taking chances on former first-round picks, so why not take a flier on the third overall selection of the 2021 NFL Draft?
His raw athleticism and cannon for an arm could make him one of the more mouth-watering options for the team, and it wouldn’t be surprising if he had an actual role as a short-yardage or read-option specialist.
Trey Lance has started a grand total of 5 Games despite playing ONE College Season.

Regardless of their current draft plans at the quarterback position, it shouldn’t be surprising to see the Browns take a chance on one of these players.
As mentioned above, Carson Wentz might make the most sense for the team going forward based on his starting experience, physical ability, and surprising amount of mobility.
