Saudi Arabia, Kuwait condemn Israeli bombing of Syria’s Daraa

**RIYADH/ISTANBUL**

Saudi Arabia and Kuwait have denounced the Israeli bombing of the Daraa province in southern Syria.

In a Wednesday statement, the Saudi Foreign Ministry reiterated its categorical rejection “of the Israeli occupation authorities’ continued attempts to undermine the security and stability of Syria and the region through their blatant and repeated violations of relevant international laws.”

It reiterated solidarity with Syria “against this unjustified Israeli aggression,” and called on the UN Security Council member states “to fulfill their role, stand firmly and seriously against these ongoing Israeli attacks and violations in Syria and the region, and activate international accountability mechanisms.”

At least six people were killed and several others injured in an Israeli incursion and shelling in the town of Koya in western Daraa on Tuesday.

The Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry, for its part, renewed its call for respecting Syria’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.

It also called on the UN Security Council to “fulfill its responsibilities in maintaining international peace and security, and put an end to the systematic and flagrant violations by the Israeli occupation that threaten the security and stability of the region.”

After the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime, Israel expanded its occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights by seizing the demilitarized buffer zone, a move that violated the 1974 disengagement agreement with Syria.

Israel also launched hundreds of airstrikes that targeted military sites and assets across Syria, including fighter jets, missile systems, and air defense installations, according to reports.

Assad, Syria’s leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia after anti-regime groups took control of Damascus on Dec. 8, ending the Baath Party regime, which had been in power since 1963.

Ahmed al-Sharaa, who led anti-regime forces to oust Assad, was declared president for a transitional period in late January.
