Premier League clubs are set to explore the possibility of closing the summer transfer window before the start of next season.

The proposed deadline is August 14, two days before the 2025/26 campaign kicks off.

All 20 clubs will discuss the idea in a meeting on Thursday, though some resistance is expected, as several European leagues are likely to keep their windows open until the start of September.

For the proposal to pass, at least 14 Premier League clubs must vote in favour.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery had previously been critical of the current system, highlighting the uncertainty it creates for players at the start of the season.

"I do not agree with the decision to keep the transfer window open until August 30 because we will play three matches during that time," he said back in August.

"I prefer the window to close when the league starts, but of course, there are many people responsible for making that decision.

"A few years ago, the Premier League decided to close the window at the beginning of the season. But they later reverted to align with other European and global leagues, closing it at the end of August.

"It's not just my opinion—many others share the view that it's disruptive when the season begins, and players leave after playing one or two matches, sometimes joining rival clubs.

"I don't think it's ideal, but I accept it. I’ll continue working over the final two weeks, staying alert to any potential changes."
