New star Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver vetoed huge trade to AFC foe

When he was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers, DK Metcalf made it quite clear how excited he was to land in the organization. Head coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Omar Khan called Metcalf and he was ready and excited to come to the Steelers.

Yet, another AFC team was in pursuit of Metcalf. According to Tom Curran, the New England Patriots wanted Metcalf, but Metcalf shut down their advances to land with the Patriots, clearing the way for the Steelers.

“I’ve come to find out that [the Patriots were in on Metcalf],” Curran said, when appearing on “Jones & Keefe.” They had conversations. An offer was not made, that’s correct. But I’ve kind of been redirected from folks outside of New England. They were in on him. He didn’t want to come here."

Metcalf’s five-year, $150 million deal was the largest gross amount of money towards a wide receiver in NFL history before Ja’Marr Chase broke that earlier this offseason. Metcalf becomes the sixth-highest-paid wide receiver on average per year with the deal.

The Steelers handed out the largest contract in team history with the deal. Technically, since Metcalf was not a free agent, that record still belongs to Queen’s three-year, $41 million deal from last year. Though, if you were to just count outside additions, Metcalf would be the franchise record.

Metcalf is an explosive playmaker who led the NFL in 20 or more yards receptions in 2024. He has a skill set similar to the team’s other standout wide receiver, George Pickens, but the two-time Pro Bowler adds a dynamic element to an offense that badly needs talent.
