‘Smart and skilled’: National media praise ‘terribly underrated’ Man Utd player after latest international win

The international break is coming to an end and Manchester United players will switch their focus back to Premier League action in the coming days.

Ruben Amorim is no doubt itching to get back to Premier League action.

Manchester United went into the international break off the back of two wins, beating Real Sociedad and Leicester City in the space of a few days.

The first international break of 2025 arguably came at the worst time for United, with that momentum broken by a two-week break.

United return to Premier League action on Tuesday night, taking on Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Amorim will hope to have avoided any injuries during this international break and will be encouraged by one player turning in a strong display.

Matthijs de Ligt barely featured for the Netherlands, whilst recently-injured Harry Maguire was left out of the England squad.

Fellow centre back Victor Lindelof was in action as he started for Sweden against Northern Ireland on Tuesday.

Lindelof was an unused substitute against Luxembourg on Saturday but was back in the team in a 5-1 thrashing of Northern Ireland.

The Swedish media were impressed with Lindelof as the United defender turned in a strong performance.

Svenska Fans hailed Lindelof as ‘incredibly important’ whilst suggesting that he is ‘terribly underrated’.

“The team captain is so incredibly important to the squad on the field. He controls the team with an iron fist it feels like. A terribly underrated player in my opinion,” they wrote.

Fotboll Skanalen added that Lindelof was ‘smart and skilled’ in the heart of the Sweden defence.

“Calm and stable. Smart and skilled in defense. Played easily,” they said.

Lindelof impressing ahead of Manchester United exit

Lindelof has been featuring in the United starting XI of late with a number of injuries handing him opportunities to impress.

The 30-year-old is in decent form right now, and he seemingly took that performance level into his Sweden commitments.

These could be the final weeks of Lindelof’s United career though with his contract expiring this summer.

Reports suggest Lindelof will be allowed to leave United on a free transfer after eight years at the club.

Benfica are keen to re-sign Lindelof after originally selling the defender to United in 2017.

Sweden boss Jon Dahl Tomasson wants Lindelof to leave United and play first-team football, something Benfica will surely offer.

Lindelof will want to finish the season on a high with United though, and going out with Europa League success would be some way to bring the curtain down on his Old Trafford career.
