Manchester United appear to have dodged a bullet over Alphonso Davies after the Bayern Munich defender suffered a serious injury during the March international break.

Davies moved from Vancouver Whitecaps to Bayern in January 2019 and has since carved out a reputation as one of Europe's best left-backs. He celebrated Champions League success with Bayern during his first full season in 2019/20 and has racked up over 200 appearances, clinching nine major trophies during his stint in Germany.

The 24-year-old's contract was set to expire this summer, leading to speculation over his long-term future in Bavaria. Davies is entering the peak years of his career, and this uncertainty reportedly caught the attention of several Premier League clubs, including the Reds, who could have signed him on a free transfer.

However, in February, the Canadian opted to sign a new contract at Bayern until 2030, ending any doubts about his stay at the Bundesliga giants.

But in a cruel twist, Davies is now set for an extended period of time on the sidelines after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in his right knee while on international duty with Canada. The young star is set to miss a number of months and will not return to action until the 2025/26 season.

Bayern have confirmed that Davies will undergo surgery on Wednesday and will be out for several months. The club’s director of sport, Max Eberl, added: “Unfortunately, during international breaks, there’s always the risk that players will return injured — this time it’s hit us particularly hard. The absences of Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano are a heavy blow for Bayern.

“Phonzy will get all the support he needs on his way back. We’ll also be closely monitoring Upa in the coming weeks and expect him to be available again soon.

"Our squad is strong and will compensate for these absences. We’ll now work even closer together.

"We have the quality to continue pursuing our big goals.”
