Leicester City on course to hit 38-year low unless Ruud van Nistelrooy can find solution

Leicester City must score against Manchester City next week if they want to avoid being tarnished by yet another negative club record.

City’s inability to find the net at home for three months has seen them set an English top-flight record of seven consecutive defeats without scoring on home turf.

But they’ve been unable to get on the scoresheet away from home either.

They head to the Etihad Stadium next week having failed to score in any of their last six Premier League outings home and away since the 2-1 win at Tottenham.

A seventh straight scoreless game would see the club’s record streak from 38 years ago matched.

In the 1987-88 season, City went from mid-November to early January without scoring a league goal, the run seeing Bryan Hamilton sacked as manager and replaced by David Pleat.

The run was eventually emphatically ended when City netted four times in a 4-4 draw with Crystal Palace.

City will hope for a similar outcome next Wednesday at the Etihad Stadium.

Discussing City’s lack of goals, manager Ruud van Nistelrooy said following the 3-0 defeat to Manchester United: “We feel we’re in a momentum where we’re creating chances but it’s not falling our way.

“If you stop believing you can be sure it won’t fall our way. When you’re believing in your work and doing your jobs, and believe that things will change, then it will change.”

City have created chances in the six games in which they have failed to score, but not many, and not enough to suggest they have been desperately unlucky in their search for a goal.

In that time they have had 47 shots, an average of less than eight a game, and 14 on target. Their expected goals tally for that period is 2.5.
