Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry is debuting a hydration-focused sports drink under the PLEZi brand founded by former first lady Michelle Obama.
Mr. Curry’s PLEZi Hydration comes in tropical punch, lemon lime and orange mango twist flavors and is being sold on the West Coast at select Walmart, Safeway, Vons and Albertsons stores. For customers elsewhere in the country, the drink is also available on Amazon.
PLEZi said in a release Wednesday that a 16.9-ounce bottle of the new drink has half the sugar, twice the electrolytes and seven times the potassium of the leading competitor sports drink, along with less sodium and a full daily dose of vitamin C.
The sports drink market is worth about $25 billion, according to CNN.
The leading brands are PepsiCo’s Gatorade, which commands 61% of the market, followed by Coca-Cola brands Powerade at 14.5% and BodyArmor at 11.8%, according to data analytics company Euromonitor International, as cited by CNBC.
“We’ve created something with smart ingredients and unbeatable flavor, so people can fuel their bodies the right way. No nonsense, no shortcuts — because the next generation deserves better,” Mr. Curry said in the release.
Each 16.9-ounce bottle costs $2.29.
