FRISCO - How low is Trey Lance stock right now?
What seemed like a nasty insult a couple of days ago - "the Dallas Cowboys' failed QB should move to Canada!'' - now seems like something the CFL itself is taking very seriously.
It was San Francisco that ended up choosing Lance - and traded first-round picks in 2021, 2022 and 2023 for the honor - in the 2021 NFL Draft in what echoes as one of the 49ers' biggest-ever errors.
And now it looks like a big Dallas error as well.
Lance lasted just three seasons with the 49ers and he struggled to see the field due to injuries and ineffective play. San Francisco sent him to Dallas two seasons ago, in exchanged for a fourth-round pick.
The Cowboys essentially kept him on the bench during entirely of his time here. ... never really discovering, frankly, if he can play a lick.
One Niners observer recently opined that Lance, still just 24, is out of NFL chances and should head off to some other league rather than the NFL.
The UFL? The CFL?
Free agency has come and gone through the first couple of waves of the process. Lance remains unemployed.
The word "bust" is being implemented.
It is worth noting that Dallas did making him a (too cheap?) late-season contract extension offer.
Obviously, Lance said no.
And now?
Dallas seems to have turned the page. The Cowboys are "targeting'' Texas QB Quinn Ewers in the NFL Draft and it's been "confirmed'' that they'd like to trade for Patriots prospect Joe Milton. There are rumors about a trade-up for Colorado's Shedeur Sanders.
Where does that leave Lance?
That CFL idea is real enough that is seems the system there, which requires franchise to put in bids on potential players, has Lance locked in to the Canadian Football League's Saskatchewan Roughriders.
They will have his exclusive negotiating rights, per a report from 3DownNation. … maybe a move just to grab headlines?
Lance has shown almost nothing in his NFL career.
Is this the ultimate insult? Or a chance at a reboot?
