Liverpool likely to return for left-back they considered submitting a bid for in January

Liverpool’s pursuit of defensive reinforcements could see them return for Ajax star Jorrel Hato this summer, with the highly-rated left-back very much firmly on their radar.

The Reds had previously considered making a move for the 19-year-old in the January transfer window, but now face increasing competition for his signature.

Liverpool’s January interest in Hato has not faded at all

At the start of the year, reports suggested that Liverpool were weighing up a bid for Hato as they looked to bolster their defensive ranks.

The Dutch youngster had already been identified as a long-term target, with his versatility and rapid development making him an attractive option for the Reds.

With Virgil van Dijk yet to sign a new contract at Anfield, Liverpool explored the possibility of bringing in Hato early, potentially grooming him as a future replacement for his Netherlands international teammate.

However, the club ultimately opted against a January move, choosing to revisit the situation in the summer instead.

Arsenal enter the race as Ajax increase asking price

Liverpool’s hesitancy may now force them into a battle for Hato’s signature, as Arsenal have officially entered the race.

The Gunners, dealing with injuries in their defensive line, recently sent scouts to monitor the Ajax star and are considering making an approach.

Initially valued at €30 million (£25m), Hato’s price tag has since risen due to heightened interest, with Ajax now demanding between €45-50 million (£37.6m-£41.8m).

Despite this, Liverpool remain well-placed financially to compete for his signing.

Growing European interest in Hato

Liverpool and Arsenal are not alone in their admiration for Hato. European powerhouses Real Madrid, Chelsea, and AC Milan have also expressed interest in the Dutch talent.

Madrid, who are also tracking AC Milan’s Theo Hernandez, see Hato as a strong alternative, while Chelsea and Milan have been closely following his progress throughout the season.

However, Milan may struggle to meet Ajax’s valuation, potentially ruling them out of the race.

Will Liverpool return for Hato?

With uncertainty surrounding Van Dijk’s future and a potential reshuffle in defence on the horizon, Liverpool could reignite their interest in Hato to secure a high-calibre left-back option.

His ability to play both centrally and out wide makes him an ideal addition to Arne Slot’s evolving squad.

If the Reds want to land one of Europe’s most promising young defenders, they may need to act decisively before their rivals make their move.
