Liverpool should give “remarkable” Mo Salah “what he wants” to keep him at Anfield next season, according to Robbie Fowler. The Egyptian superstar has overtaken Fowler to become the third highest Reds goalscorer in history behind only Ian Rush and Roger Hunt.

But Salah, 32, is out of contract at the end of the season and extension talks have hit a stalemate over money and the length of a new deal. Captain Virgil van Dijk is in a similar position while Trent Alexander Arnold is set to sign for Real Madrid on a free transfer. “Certainly as a Liverpool fan, I want Liverpool to keep them,” said Fowler.

"I want the three players to stay there. I think it's maybe a poor situation from the club for letting it come as long as this. But whatever happens is, I'm a big believer in what Mo's done and what he's achieved has been phenomenal. He's been a remarkable player for Liverpool. He's been an unbelievable player this year.

“I would go and give him what he wants for the simple fact is that he's proven. Anyone who comes into Liverpool now you're going to spend an awful lot of money on getting him here plus his wages. So why not give Mo that money for someone who's tried and tested? I don't know what will happen. Out of the three players, I would be amazed if the three of them signed but I would be equally amazed if two of them don't.”

Salah was poor in the Champions League defeat to Paris-Saint Germain and the Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle. But Fowler, who sits seventh in the all-time Anfield scorers chart with 183 goals, said: "I'm careful not to get too down on him because he's been incredible this year. His last two games have not been great, we know that and he'll be the first to admit that.

“I'm wary of people jumping on his back because you're supposedly the best player in the world. And the best player in the world, you have a moment of magic in any particular game. And he never had that against Newcastle. And I don't want to create headlines by any means, but that is probably the worrying thing. He just never had anything.

"But for what he's done, what he's achieved and, and look, and what he will achieve in the remaining games because I've, I've no doubt that he will be a player who will score more goals and he'll be causing chaos and havoc.”

And the Liverpool legend reckoned securing the futures of Salah and Van Dijk will give the champions-elect a boost after losing out on two competitions just before the international break.

"They are great players so as a football club, you want your best players to sign,” Fowler added. “And you want players who are available to come into your club because you want everyone to be lifted. You want your team mates to be lifted.

"And if any of the three sign, it's going to give everyone a little bit of a boost, gonna give everyone a little bit of a lift. That's what you want in football. I am talking as if they have won it but they will get a lift with the Premier League. But imagine if they win the Premier League and then they sign these three players. I mean, it'll be the best club in the world again, won't it?"
