Chelsea target has better conversion rate than Erling Haaland and Alexander Isak, he could cost just£30m this summer

Chelsea want to sign a new striker in the upcoming transfer window, and one of their reported targets has put up some really good numbers over the last couple of seasons.

Nicolas Jackson is Chelsea‘s first-choice centre-forward and has not done a bad job leading the line for the Blues.

This term, the 23-year-old has scored nine goals in 23 Premier League outings. In the previous campaign, he netted 14 times in 35 appearances.

However, Chelsea need some more cover for him and are likely to acquire just that this summer. Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap is on Chelsea’s radar, but he is not the only name they are looking at.

Jean-Philippe Mateta’s conversion rate

Last month, it was claimed that Chelsea are monitoring Jean-Philippe Mateta ahead of the summer transfer window.

Based on his stats over the last two seasons, the Crystal Palace star would not be a bad signing for Enzo Maresca‘s side.

For example, according to WhoScored, Mateta has a shot conversion rate of 28% since the beginning of the 2023/24 campaign. That is even better than Erling Haaland and Alexander Isak‘s.

Best shot conversion rates in the Premier League since the start of last season (100+ shots):

◎ 31.7% – Chris Wood

◎ 28.0% – Jean-Philippe Mateta

◎ 27.2% – Alexander Isak

◎ 21.5% – Erling Haaland

The good news for Chelsea is that the 27-year-old may not even cost that much money. It is thought that Mateta could be sold for as little as £30m this summer, which is barely anything in this day and age.

In the 2023/24 Premier League season, Mateta scored 16 goals in 35 matches, and he has carried that goalscoring form into the current campaign.

Jean-Philippe Mateta’s stats this season

Mateta would be Chelsea’s second highest goalscorer in the Premier League if he was part of Maresca’s squad right now.

This term, the Frenchman has scored 12 goals, which means Cole Palmer is the only player at Chelsea who has netted more times than him.

Mateta’s xG is also 12.24, so he has not been too wasteful, while the former Mainz star has also managed to register a couple of assists.

For £30m, Chelsea could do so much worse than Mateta, and his numbers undoubtedly prove that.
