When discussing the non-stop rumours linking him with a summer move away from Newcastle, Alexander Isak’s message has been consistent; he’s happy, doesn’t buy into the gossip and is focused on the project he bought into on Tyneside.
“We want to finish strong and reach the Champions League” was a recent quote of his to the Swedish media last week, signalling the importance of a top five finish.
But this week, prior to his stunning goal and assist (watch here) in Sweden’s 5-1 mauling of Northern Ireland on Tuesday night, Isak made it known just how much he’s enjoying creating special memories in a black and white shirt.
For all the Liverpool and Arsenal fans believing Alexander Isak only has eyes on a summer move, they may want to read his latest quotes and the connection he’s building with this club.
Discussing the scenes at Wembley and the celebrations to come this weekend, Isak discussed the emotional scenes and admitted that day was the greatest moment of his career to date:
“You cannot describe it,” Isak said. “Almost every fan I looked up at in Wembley was crying. There were so many emotions in my head, it was almost surreal.
“The best day of my life? From a football perspective, I think so. The party (after the game) was incredible – although not too long for me as I was leaving in the morning.
Ahead of Saturday’s Town Moor party and bus parade, he added: “I can’t wait to see what Newcastle is like as a city after that.”
There is no doubt Newcastle must match his ambitions soon enough, with Champions League football likely to be essential soon enough, but he clearly loves playing at Newcastle and believes in the project he joined in 2022 as he waits to begin talks over a new contract.
Speaking ahead of the final a few weeks ago, he said: “I am happy here and we’re contenders for titles, which is what you want as a football player. The chances are there (to win things).”
“As I’ve said, I’m not thinking about the summer, but that (talks over a new contract) will be a talking point when the season is finished.”
Last night, Isak followed up a sensation assist with a brilliant strike from 25 yards to make it 28 goals for the season for club and country.
It wasn’t the first time he’s struck from outside the box this term and it seems he’s planning to shoot more from range.
“I’ve had a few of those this season,” he said after Tuesday’s 5-1 win. “I feel like I need to do it more often – just hit it. I have a good finish and need to use it more. It’s great that it went in.”
