The Tennessee Titans have been keeping their intentions with the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft close to the vest this offseason with new general manager Mike Borgonzi. However, momentum has been building in recent weeks that Miami quarterback Cam Ward is the front-runner to be selected by the Titans.
On Monday, head coach Brian Callahan spoke with Jim Wyatt of Titans.com and said that the team is far from completed with their evaluations of the top prospects. In fact, he listed three other college players that are still in the running for the first overall pick.
"Coach Brian Callahan said the Titans are doing their due diligence on Ward," wrote Wyatt. "Just like they're doing with Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, Colorado defensive back/receiver Travis Hunter, and Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter."
While Ward is widely considered to be the best quarterback in the class, the Titans have far more issues than a rookie quarterback can solve in year one. The team still needs an elite wide receiver, more pass rush help and another solid piece in the secondary.
Sanders is a quarterback as well, but the team could still select him if they trade back and would gain more draft capital as a result of the move. Carter would provide instant pass rush help, and Hunter could kill two birds with one stone by being an elite wide receiver as well as a solid piece in the secondary.
The draft is still weeks away, so nothing needs to be set in stone yet. Especially not for the team who picks No. 1 and holds the draft in the palm of their hands.
