United have earned millions from the Europa League this season, and missing out on Europe for next season would be a major blow given how valuable qualification is.
However, United could fall even further behind their rivals if they do not join them in the new Fifa Club World Cup tournament.

Now it has been reported that the winners of the competition will pocket £97m ($125m) for lifting the trophy. To put that in context, that makes it more lucrative than winning the Champions League final.
Ineos want to win the Premier League by 2028, but the prize money on offer in the Club World Cup will catch their attention.
CEO Omar Berrada confirmed that Ineos want Amorim in charge when the new stadium opens up in 2030, it will be down to the Portuguese coach to lead the Red Devils to the Club World Cup.
How Man United can qualify for the Fifa Club World Cup
The only way to salvage this season is if Amorim can win the Europa League and return Manchester United to the Champions League.
The new Club World Cup format features 32 teams from across the globe competing across a two-month competition. The inaugural competition takes place in the United States this summer.
There are two ways to qualify for the club World Cup:
The winners of contintental competitions in the last four years (Uefa Champions League)
Via Uefa’s ranking pathway
Europe is allocated 12 qualification spots so once the Champions League winners are selected, the remainder are picked through Uefa’s coefficient ranking system.
United sit 13th in Uefa’s five-year coefficient table, but winning the Europa League this season would provide some valuable points.
