Newcastle United reportedly want to sign Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah.
Quansah has been one of Liverpool’s key players since breaking into the first team last season.
The England defender captained the club’s youth team at different levels and has made 55 appearances for the club since his debut last season.
Although he has featured less prominently for the club this season, the 22-year-old is seen as an important member of Arne Slot’s team.
He only recently signed a new long-term contract at Liverpool, but he is said to be on the shortlist of Newcastle.
This is according to The Times, who claim that the Carabao Cup winners are hoping that a serious bid and the proposal of a regular first-team role would entice the 22-year-old centre back to St James’ Park.
“The Liverpool centre back Jarell Quansah is a potential target for Newcastle United in the summer transfer window as they look to build on their Carabao Cup success,” Martin Hardy wrote for The Times.
The report also claims that Eddie Howe’s side believes that Liverpool could be tempted to sell if they are offered £30m for the defender.
“The 22-year-old has four years left on his contract at Anfield, but the Tyneside club believe a £30 million bid plus add-ons may tempt Liverpool into selling the Englishman,” the report added.
The report also added that Newcastle’s interest in Quansah is not new, as the Magpies enquired about him last summer, when Liverpool were keen on Gordon.
However, although a deal could not be done last summer, their interest in the player has been maintained.
Why Newcastle did not sign Jarell Quansah last summer
We can exclusively reveal why Newcastle did not sign Jarell Quansah last summer.
Eddie Howe had a firm interest in bringing Jarell Quansah to St. James Park last summer. Quansah was not offered as part of any deal for Anthony Gordon, both moves we separate proposed deals.
Liverpool turned down Newcastle’s approach after Quansah was a stand out performer during Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the USA.
Arne Slot was incredibly impressed with the England international and decided against sanctioning his move.
It was believed that Liverpool were initially open to a proposed move but Quansah’s impressive displays in the US ruled out any proposed move.
