Trump’s Tariffs: Is a Global Trade War in the Offing?

When the first Trump administration had imposed tariffs on Canada in 2018, the latter country retaliated with counter-tariffs on US goods worth 12.6 billion dollars, covering everything from steel, aluminium, to consumer products like ketchup and lawnmowers. Tension between the two countries escalated in June the same year at the G7 summit in Quebec, with Trump calling Trudeau “dishonest” and “weak”. But this did not stop the Land of Maple Leaf. Canada's retaliatory tariffs took effect in June 2018 and mirrored the rates imposed by the US.
