Former Texas star Quinn Ewers was once considered the top quarterback prospect of the 2025 NFL draft class, but now is expected to wait until Day 3 to hear his name called.
One draft expert has an explanation for the drop, calling out the former Longhorn quarterback's decision-making. In a post on X, football analyst Todd McShay noted that Ewers seems to check all the boxes of a first-round prospect yet is expected to fall to the fourth round or later.
"Why is it that this 5-star recruit, at Ohio State and then at Texas, stars at the Manning camp is great in 7-on-7 and beautiful throwing the football, why isn't he elevating Texas?" McShay said. "Why are we talking fourth round and not first round for Ewers?"

McShay highlighted a video of an interception, explaining that Ewers failed to properly read the pocket. Instead of standing tall and taking a hit as he delivered the ball, Ewers instead tried to get it out quickly and underthrew the receiver, resulting in an interception.
"First-round arm talent, but we're talking now the fourth round for Quinn Ewers," McShay said. "These are now the little things that show up on tape that help explain the why."
Nick Akridge of Pro Football Focus agreed with McShay, listing pocket presence as one of the biggest areas of weakness for Ewers.
"Ewers exhibits consistent discomfort under pressure," Akridge wrote. "He frequently abandons clean pockets, leading to the 11th-most quarterback-faulted pressures in 2024. He also tends to take numerous sacks when the opposing pass rush eventually collapses the pocket, resulting in a shaky 23.2% pressure-to-sack rate."
